In My Opinion...
This is probably my favorite record store within the Philly area. The impeccable organization of the records blew my mind. It was incredibly easy to sort through hundreds of records in a short period of time, without feeling exhausted. The walls and shelves are lined with crafts made from old records, and I am always tempted to buy the Rocky Horror Picture Show clock, but always chicken out. The cashier and owner are genuine, friendly, and warm. They're willing to help you find a cool records, make a recommendation, or tell you stories from the 70s when record stores were the place to be on a Friday night. Not to mention, they have the cutest poodle welcome you when you walk in the door. I would highly recommend Gold Million Records for anyone cruising through the Bryn Mawr area, or someone who's looking for quality records and people.
What the people say...
I was surprised to discover that Gold Million evolved out of Bryn Mawr's legendary Plastic Fantastic. Back in the day, when vinyl was simply the way you bought music (unless you were buying prerecorded cassettes--blech!), Plastic Fantastic still stood out from other record shops with its cool alternative vibe, artist appearances, and rare finds. It was obvious that the people who ran it weren't just in in for money--they loved music, and it showed. Gold Million still exudes that passion, but it's also a bit older and wiser. For starters, it's a much more pleasant browsing experience than I remember from the old days, and the catalogue has only gotten deeper and more diverse with time. They have also begun to cater to collectors and enthusiasts of the medium as much to the music, with kitschy paraphernalia and charming gifts that complement the main attraction quite nicely. Overall, great little shop.
